returned to work with Doctors of the World (DOW) in August 2011 as a medical
evaluator in Dolo area of Ethiopia.  It is located on the border of Somalia.  Joanna was sent in response to the famine

So at the end of this week I will be leaving.  Myanmar is a beautiful country and when I get onto that plane on Saturday evening I will be taking some wonderful memories home with me.

I am nearing the end of my mission, so I am beginning to get anxious about all the work that I still have to do. I have been working on remodeling the health education programme and we are about to start piloting the new model. It is quite exciting, but a little nerve wracking as well.

Doctors of the World has a sub-base there.  It is a building where the field teams can stay when they are in the area. I have been out in the field on various field trips, to meet the members of the Village Health Committees and Community Health Workers and villagers in the villages where the project is focusing. Generally we have to travel by boat along branches of the Ayarawady River.

I have now been in Myanmar (Burma) for a month and have seen and done so many things for the first time in my life, that it really feels as though I have been here for at least a year!

These are a few pictures of our first 3 weeks in Yangon. We arrived in December 2009 and were met at the airport by Erwin the Doctors of the World employee who I am replacing.

The final pictures are of the Shwedagon Pagoda which has more gold on it than is in the vaults of the Bank of England. Its massive 2500 years old and is set on a hill in Yangon about 3 miles from our home.

On the 24th February, our team in Darfur was forced to evacuate after the sudden attack by against rebel forces.

This new crisis has led to the internal displacement of over 100,000 people, further increasing their vulnerability, as they already suffer from insufficient healthcare.

Last few days…

Emily Denness, a trained midwife from Richmond, London, decided that she wanted to experience new cultures while giving something back to local communities. At the end of summer she left her job in Lymington, Hampshire, to board a plane heading towards Cairo, Egypt, before finally arriving at Deribat, in Darfur, Sudan.

It seems like yesterday that I arrived in Haiti, but nearly three weeks later a lot of water has gone under the bridge. We drive through Port-au-Prince each day on the way to and from the hospital. So, we get snap-shots of what is happening in the city as each day goes by.  In the first days there was just a mad rushing about as everyone simply tried to survive and find out who else was still alive.

I wonder if you have lived a day which has changed your life. Well I suppose that I just have. This was my first day doing surgery in Haiti. I don’t want to get into gory details but I have never seen anything like this in all my life. They tell me that last week was much worse. Well all I can say is that I am glad that I didn’t see it.
